Importing into Ireland

What changes when the goods are going to Ireland

The sourcing is the same as for anywhere else. The route, the VAT and the product rules are where Irish importers lose time and money.

  • Route matters more than the rate

Goods for Ireland can sail direct to Dublin or Cork, come through Rotterdam, or cross Great Britain. Crossing GB means two customs borders unless the goods move under transit. We plan the route before you book.

    Importing into the EU
  • VAT at 23%, without the cash hit

Ireland charges import VAT at 23%. VAT-registered importers can use postponed accounting and declare it on the VAT return instead of paying at the port. Our compliance team handles Irish VAT registration and returns.

    VAT registration
  • EU product rules apply in full

CE marking where it applies, the General Product Safety Regulation and an economic operator in the EU named on the product. We plan tests and labels at the quoting stage, not after the goods land.

    EU authorised representative
  • An EORI from Revenue

Irish businesses register for an EU EORI number with Revenue. It works across the EU, and your broker needs it on every import declaration.

The questions Irish buyers ask us first

  • Will my goods get stuck crossing Great Britain?

Not if the route is planned. We quote direct sailings to Dublin or Cork and routes through Rotterdam, and if GB is the better option your forwarder books it under transit from the start.

  • I can’t afford 23% VAT on top of the goods at the port.

If you are VAT registered, postponed accounting lets you declare import VAT on your return instead of paying it at clearance. We set the paperwork up for it before the first shipment.

  • How do I know the factory is real before I pay?

We check the business licence on China’s national registry, match the bank account to the licence before you send a deposit, and can audit the factory on site.

Questions

Sourcing from China for Ireland: common questions

Do you work with businesses in Ireland?

Yes. We source, inspect and ship for Irish importers, and our compliance team handles Irish VAT, EPR and the EU authorised representative role. Our EU representative address is in Ennis, Co. Clare.

How long does shipping from China to Ireland take?

By sea, about 35 to 50 days door to door in October 2026, depending on the route and whether the service sails through Suez or round the Cape. Air freight takes about a week. Rail to mainland Europe, then by sea to Ireland, sits between the two.

What import duty do I pay in Ireland on goods from China?

The EU’s common customs tariff applies, so the rate is the same as anywhere in the EU: most consumer goods pay 0% to 12% of the value including freight to the EU border. Look up your commodity code in TARIC and check for anti-dumping duty on Chinese goods.

Is it better to ship to Ireland through the UK?

Usually not since Brexit. Goods crossing Great Britain pass through two customs borders unless they travel under transit. Direct sailings to Dublin or Cork, or routing through Rotterdam, avoid that.
