What EPR means for an importer
Under EPR, whoever first places a product or its packaging on a national market pays towards collecting and recycling it. If you import from China and sell into Europe, that is usually you, not the factory. Each country runs its own register, categories and reporting calendar.
The main categories
- Packaging: almost every seller. Covers retail packaging, inserts, fillers and shipping cartons.
- WEEE (electrical and electronic equipment): anything with a plug, battery or circuit board.
- Batteries: standalone batteries and batteries built into products.
- France-specific streams: textiles, furniture, toys, printed paper, tyres, sports and leisure goods, DIY and garden articles.
- UK Plastic Packaging Tax: a separate tax on plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content, above a volume threshold.
Marketplaces enforce it
Amazon and other online marketplaces must check that sellers are registered for EPR in countries such as Germany and France, and can remove listings that lack a valid registration number. For many sellers, the marketplace notice is the first they hear of it.
Designing packaging with EPR in mind
Fees are charged by weight and material. When we develop packaging with your factory, we can reduce unnecessary material and mixed plastics, which lowers EPR costs as well as freight.
